چکیده

Conceptual database schemas can be used to create standard data representations for an application domain. Despite the commonalities which exist in data requirements of organizations of a same domain, some structural variability is required to accommodate organizations’ specific needs. Current database modeling techniques are not able to express structural data variability. To address the problem, this paper introduces the Database Feature Diagrams (DBFDs), a database modeling technique derived from the Software Product Lines Engineering paradigm. A DBFD can be used to create an extensible and reusable family of conceptual schemas, which in turn generates customized databases for an application domain.

Conceptual Modeling for Customized XML Schemas

XML was initially developed for document management, but it is becoming increasingly used for storing and exchanging all kinds of data on the Internet. In this paper, we introduce a design methodology for XML schemas that is based upon well-understood conceptual modeling methodologies. Because XML is hierarchical (tree-structured), many different XML schemas (or document structures) can be gene...

On Using a Semiotic Quality Framework to Evaluate the Quality of Conceptual Database Schemas

In this paper, we introduce a semiotics-based framework for evaluating the quality of conceptual schemas of databases. We created it based on an existing semiotics-based framework that has been used to evaluate other types of software entities. We propose two measures for evaluating the perceived semantic quality of conceptual schemas. The measures consider correspondence between conceptual dat...

UML and XML Schema

XML is rapidly becoming the standard method for sending information across the Internet. XML Schema, since its elevation to W3C Recommendation on the 2 May 2001, is fast becoming the preferred means of describing structured XML data. However, until recently, there has been no effective means of graphically designing XML Schemas without exposing designers to low-level implementation issues. Bird...

Rule-Based Generation of XML Schemas from UML Class Diagrams

We present an approach of how to automatically extract an XML document structure from a conceptual data model that describes the content of the document. We use UML class diagrams as the conceptual model that can be represented in XML syntax (XMI). The algorithm we present in the paper is implemented as a set of rules using XSLT stylesheets that transform the UML class diagram into an adequate ...
